First 100 Miles: Essential Maintenance After Buying a Surron or Talaria
By Walid – Updated May 2026
That first 100 miles are the most important miles you'll ride on a new electric dirt bike. If you skip the basic checks now, you can end up with loosened bolts, worn chain tension, or missed clutch/rotation issues that are easy to fix early.
- Retorque all frame and suspension bolts.
- Check chain tension and lubrication.
- Inspect brake pads and bleed if needed.
- Confirm wheel nut torque and axle alignment.
- Verify battery charge cycles and charger condition.
- Look for fluid leaks, damaged wiring, or loose connectors.
Why these first rides matter
New electric bikes settle in. Suspension pivots move slightly, bolts can back out, and a new chain may stretch quickly. The first 100 miles are when your bike earns reliability or shows issues.
Step 1: Torque everything properly
After the first day on the bike, re-check every fastener you can access. The most important ones are:
- Frame clamps and triple clamp bolts
- Handlebar mounts and risers
- Rear axle nuts and chain adjusters
- Brake caliper bolts and rotor bolts
- Battery pack mounts and connector covers
If you don't have a torque wrench, get one. A loose axle nut or caliper bolt can ruin a ride in seconds.
Step 2: Chain and sprockets
A new chain will settle into the sprockets during the first 50 miles. Check tension every ride and lube the chain after every wet ride. If your chain looks loose, tighten it before the 100-mile mark.
Step 3: Brakes and controls
Make sure the brake lever feel stays firm. If it gets spongy, bleed the brake before the first 100 miles are complete. Also verify that your throttle and brake switch are working smoothly.
Step 4: Battery care
Charge your battery fully before the first ride, then don't run it all the way to empty. A good rule for the first 100 miles is to keep charge between 20% and 90% whenever possible.
Step 5: First service appointment
Bring your bike back for the first service at 50–100 miles. At Volt Rush USA we do a 25-point inspection, adjust chain tension, torque hardware, inspect suspension, and verify battery connectors. This first service is the best investment in long-term reliability.
Common first-100-mile issues
- Loose chain or missing chain guard bolts.
- Brake rotor alignment or pad seating problems.
- Battery connector rattle or loose seat bolts.
- Suspension preload that needs adjustment after the first rides.
Pro tip: Keep a ride log for the first 100 miles. Note the date, mileage, tire pressure, and any sounds or vibration. This makes troubleshooting much faster if something starts to feel off.
